  Marie-Anne Barbel <Fournel> stands as a notable example of an 18th-century colonial businesswoman. In 1723, at the age of 20, she married Jean-Louis Fornel <Fournel>, a bourgeois merchant active in the colonial economy of New France.¹

  Between 1724 and 1741, she gave birth to fourteen children, of whom only three survived into adulthood, reflecting the high infant and childhood mortality rates of the period.²

  During her husband’s lifetime, Marie-Anne Barbel acted as his legal and commercial representative. After his death in 1745, instead of proceeding with the customary liquidation of marital property, she chose to continue managing and expanding the business herself.³

  She obtained a fur‑trading license, invested in real estate, pursued commercial litigation, and acquired a pottery manufacturing enterprise. Through these activities, she belonged to the class of mid‑level colonial merchants who formed the backbone of the New France economy.⁴

  Marie-Anne Barbel delayed the final division of the marital estate for 36 years after her husband’s death. During this time, she reinvested capital into her ventures and supported several of her adult children, demonstrating an exceptional degree of economic autonomy for a woman of her era.⁵

  1. Bourgeois merchant – An urban commercial class involved in trade, finance, and property ownership in New France.
  2. Child mortality – Fewer than half of children in 18th‑century New France survived to adulthood.
  3. Community property – Governed by the Coutume de Paris, typically liquidated upon a husband’s death.
  4. Mid‑level merchants – Regional merchants combining trade, manufacturing, and real‑estate investment.
  5. Female economic autonomy – Widows could wield significant business power despite legal constraints.

He stayed at Simone’s farm near Villeneuve, Alta. He then brought the family out West. They stayed in St. Albert before going to Colinton, Alta.,homestead, in 1912.While in St.Albert, Nap. sr. fixed shoe’s for the GreyNuns. Henri took over the homestead at Colinton. Marie Jeanne tells a story, about how her sister Julliette saved her from drowning. Marie Jeanne had borrowed her brother Charles’s small axe to cut a hole in the ice covering Pine Creek. The axe fell thru the hole. When she tried to retrieve the axe, she fell in, her sister Julliette pulled her out. Another story Marie Jeanne relates to Julliette suffering from Croup, and having problems breathing. Their father gave her a spoonful of Coal Oil and Sugar. This made her cough up some mucous. Coal Oil today would be poisonous.In 1917 they moved to Winterburn, Alta. The Larue’s were operating a Creamery. Nap. sr. bought a farm here from Mrs. Tough at Winterburn. While setting up at this location ; a Mr. Olsen started to drill for oil with a wooden derrick , he ran out of money and quit. He was 100' short from finding oil in 1917.
